We spent the last week at the Hilton in Kitty Hawk, NC on the Outer Banks. I didn't have a lot of safety concerns. It's a nice place, not "party central." But a person still needs to maintain situational awareness and maintain safety. I made a short video with some reminders and tips for staying safe on vacation in a hotel room. If I was staying in a roadside motel, Daytona on spring break, in a major city, or internationally, I'd take a lot more precautions, but this is aimed at a nice resort/tourist destination.
Another tip not related to safety: if you go during the off season, you'll save money and it will be less crowded.
